Green Earth Society Monthly Email – July 2008
Dear Valued Members & Customers,
|
Are you ready for the summer?
Hot summer has arrived, it's especially important to protect our skin from the sun to prevent damage
and premature aging. Everything we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream, it is important
that toxic chemicals used in most sunscreen products are actually carcinogenic. Chemicals absorbed by the
skin circulate throughout the body and end up harming the liver. These chemicals actually caused skin, liver
and other types of cancers in us.
|
Chemicals commonly found in sunscreens include the followings:
Active Ingredient
|
Side Effect
|
|
Aminobenzoic
acid (PABA) |
·
High doses (such as 8 grams per
day or more) may cause low blood sugar, rash,
fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and (on rare
occasions) liver damage.
·
Possible carcinogen may be
implicated in cardiovascular disease.
·
Can
cause a skin rash and allergic
photosensitivities |
|
Avobenzone |
·
Possible carcinogen
·
Sunlight causes
this unstable ingredient to break down into
unknown chemicals, especially in the presence of
another active ingredients. |
|
Cinoxate
|
·
Some evidence of skin toxicity
|
|
Dioxybenzone
|
·
Strong evidence of skin toxicity
·
Possible carcinogen
·
Hormone disruptor |
|
Homosalate
|
·
Endocrine disruption
|
|
Methylparaben |
·
Interferes with genes
·
Has endocrine
disruption effect. |
|
Anthranilate |
·
May
cause adverse reactions when applied in high
concentrations to the skin. |
|
Oxybenzone |
·
It links to allergies, hormone
disruption and cell damage.
·
It can cause skin rash and
allergic photosensitivities.
·
It caused the production of free
radicals.
·
It helps other chemicals
penetrate the skin.
·
It links to low birth weight in
babies whose mothers are exposed during
pregnancy. |
|
cinnamates |
·
It can cause skin rash and
allergic photosensitivities. |
|
Octocrylene
|
·
Be persistent and bioaccumulative
in wildlife and liver tissues..
·
Possible carcinogen
·
It caused the
production of free radicals. |
|
Octyl
methoxycinnamate |
·
Estrogenic effects are noted in
laboratory animals.
·
Disruption of thyroid hormone and
brain signaling. |
|
Octisalate
|
·
It is a penetration enhancer,
which may increase the amount of other
ingredients passing through skin. |
|
Octyl salicylate |
·
Broad systemic effects in animals
at moderate doses. |
|
Oxybenzone |
·
Possible carcinogen
·
Contributor to vascular disease.
·
It may affect the brain and
nervous system in animals
|
|
Phenoxyethanol |
·
Irritant
·
Possible carcinogen
·
Endocrine disruption |
|
Padimate O |
·
Suspected carcinogen.
·
It releases free radicals,
damages DNA.
·
It has estrogenic activity
·
It causes allergic reactions in
some people. |
|
Phenylbenzimidazole
sulfonic acid |
·
possible carcinogen. |
|
Sulisobenzone
|
·
Strong evidence of skin toxicity.
·
It affects sense organs in
animals. |
|
Titanium dioxide
|
·
Some TiO2 sunscreens contain nano-size
particles may have greater toxicity to body
tissues and environment.
·
It links to allergies, hormone
disruption and cell damage. |
|
Trolamine
salicylate |
·
It can cause cardiovascular or
blood toxicity. |
|
Zinc oxide |
·
It bioaccumulates in wildlives
·
Evidence of reproductive
toxicity.
·
Micronized
zinc particles may be more toxic to living cells
and the environment. |
Something
doesn't make sense here - to prevent skin cancer, we
need to lather on potentially carcinogenic compounds and
chemicals that interfere with our immune and
reproductive systems; plus which also poses a risk to
the wider environment?
According to ES&T's
Robert Weinhold, sunscreens cause coral bleaching by
killing zooxanthellae, the algae that form a symbiotic
relationship with corals - even at very low levels. It
killed the algae within a span of just 4 days; they do
so by stimulating viruses typically found in
coral-inhabiting algae. Close to 10% of all of the
world's reefs could be at risk from the 4,000-6,000
metric tons of sunscreen that wash off on an annual
basis.
Dr. G. Ainsleigh proposes that sunscreen use causes more
cancer deaths than it prevents. He says more cancer
deaths could be prevented by regular but moderate sun
exposure instead of relying on the heavy use of
sunscreens.
A moderate exposure to the sun helps our body to produce
vitamin D, which is important for maintaining healthy
bones and minimizing the risk of bone fracture. Recent
studies shown that vitamin D prevents up to 77 of all
cancers in women which included breast cancer, colon
cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, brain tumors…etc.
In fact, the sunscreens harm our bodies and the
environment.
